The railway was opened with a ceremonial run on 25 May 1848. The station building was erected in front of the Servatii-Tor (gate) between the modern streets of Wolbecker Straße and Albersloher Weg. About a month after the opening passenger services were added to the freight traffic on the line. However, the new means of transport was not particularly successful in the early years.
